Right now I should hurry a bit and pack my suitcase. But instead of this I browsed through my folder with the shots from the meetup last weekend and I came across this one. When I was looking at it I had to remember a lecture I heard nearly six months ago. It was about the composition of a picture and about the meanings of different lines. The lecturer said that a plumb line which goes down (from left to right) causes a negative feeling. A plumb line which begins at the bottom of the left side and goes up to the top of the right hand side of the picture always effect something positive. (My simple explanation for that was that people are to accustomed to watch their markets...) But still I am not sure if these lines provoke the same feelings in me? So I used the picture to find out what happens to me while looking at the different directions of the plumb lines (you can compare them as well when you have a look here). Actually I have to admit that nothing at all happened to me. I still prefer the version I have posted because it is the original one. But maybe something in my feeling area is damaged and therefore it would help me a lot to hear what feelings you have while looking at these pictures. Musste dabei einen kurzen Vortrag denken, den ich vor ca. sechs Monaten über Bildgestaltung gehört habe. Dabei ging es um die Auswirkungen, die unterschiedliche Senkrechte bei einem auslösen. Also: geht eine Senkrechte von oben links nach unten rechts, so erzeugt dies ein negatives Gefühl beim Betrachter. Geht sie hingegen von links unten nach oben rechts, so entsteht ein positives Gefühl. (Meine simple Erklärung dafür war, dass die Nasen auf der Welt sich schon zu sehr an das Betrachten von ihren Börsenkursen gewöhnt haben; aber daher kommt es sicherlich nicht!) Skeptisch wie ich bin, wollte ich dem irgendwie nicht so glauben und so habe ich das Bild einfach mal gespiegelt und beide nebeneinander gehalten und verglichen. Dann habe ich sie mir auch noch einmal einzeln angeschaut. Und, was hat es bei mir ausgelöst? Nix! (Naja vielleicht schon etwas: am Ende mochte ich das Bild nimmer mehr sehen...) Deshalb meine Frage an Dich: Was lösen diese Senkrechte bei Dir aus? Gibt es da Unterschiede? Ist irgendetwas in der Gegend, in der die Gefühle ausgelöst werden, bei mir kaputt gegangen. well... i first saw this shot and i quite liked it. not too sure what made me like it - but i didn't have a negative feeling. i also didn't get a positive or negative feeling from your other shot either. but what is funny is that i prefer the original shot as it was the first i saw of it. maybe if you had posted the other shot, i may have liked that more. who knows!? that's something a psycologist would understand.
well, that's my thoughts... maybe i too have a damaged feeling box :oP

naja, von unten links nach rechts oben hat mehr diese aufstrebende, eben positive austrahlung!
life's what you make it, daher empfinde ich bei beiden bildern vor allem eins: sie harmonieren perfekt miteinander. diese beiden grossformatig nebeneinander an der wand...klasse!
und lässt ausserdem alles offen.
und je nachdem wie man sie aufhängt, geht es eben nach dem abhang wieder hoch oder nach dem berg wieder runter.

also ich dachte zuerst als ich das Bild sah, dass es eine sehr geschmackvolle Nahaufnahme ist. Dann hab ich den Text gelesen und mir das zweite bild mit den positiven Gefühlen angeschaut. Ich muss sagen dass mir das Zweite tatsächlich besser gefällt, und ich kanns nicht erklären. Von der Aktienkurstheorie halte ich nicht wirklich viel, aber woran liegt es dann? Ist das vielleicht sowas ähnliches wie mit dem goldenen Schnitt?

One thing I'm sure of is that a diagonal line is more dynamic that an horizontal one. And the rivet in the middle is useful as a resting point. Actually it might have been interesting to see the same picture with the rivet placed more at the bottom. Anyway, it's quite good as it is. And have a nice and safe journey!
I like both versions, but, as geoff said, as I saw this one first, it feels more 'right'! Love the shallow depth of field & the almost monochrome feel to it.
When are you off on your trip? Will you be able to post when you are out there?
I suppose, as we tend to view things from left to right (as in reading), that a line that goes top right bottom left is descending and the bottom left top right one ascending. Hence the positive negative.
Having said that, I don't feel either whichever version I view. So it's probably just psychobabble.
I agree with your teacher. When I looked at your picture I had not a pleasant feeling. The picture is very grey, cool, cold... and maybe those lines going down.
When I looked at your second version (lines going up) I still had this gloomy feeling but a bit less. :-)
I like both images. I do howeveer feel the alternate image to be slightly more appealing. I think because we scan an image or page from left to right and the alternate represents an 'on the up' feeling rather than a 'downer'. Oh, far too deep for me. I like both!
Mmm, if you have a damaged feeling area, then I have that too, as the photo didn't provoke negative feelings in me either. On the other hand photos are often Rorschach blots, and everybody sees different things in them, according to our pre-existent mood. I like this photo, and I can feel the strength and simplicity of these metal shiny lines.

well... i first saw this shot and i quite liked it. not too sure what made me like it - but i didn't have a negative feeling. i also didn't get a positive or negative feeling from your other shot either. but what is funny is that i prefer the original shot as it was the first i saw of it. maybe if you had posted the other shot, i may have liked that more. who knows!? that's something a psycologist would understand.
